Work on the second cabin and benches

Here we can see the 3 walls of the second cabin glued to the deck and the removable front wall made

Next I was getting the pieces ready for the items that would be built inside the four rooms.  From right to left the rooms are two bedrooms, the kitchen and a barrel store

The first two pics show the strips of wood cut to size to make the barrel rack and the shelves in both rooms. The third pic shows in the background the finished barrel store and below all the metal parts for the kitchen and two bedrooms that need painting.  Also there are the bench parts awaiting painting

Now we see the finished rooms and I was very pleased with the results

The bedrooms with the beds, bedside cabinets and table and chair and below the kitchen with the oven and two tables

I then started work on the stairway up from the lower deck to the second deck and also the benches

Here are the laser cut stairway sections and in the second pic the painted bench parts, the constructed stairway awaiting treads and the cut strips for the benches and stairway

Firstly I had to colour the strips of wood and to lessen the mess I used a watercolour pencil
I then had to construct the single and double benches so I made a very simple jig with four small pieces of offcut

These made my life a lot easier and I soon had the stairway and benches constructed.  I used normal thick CA for the stairway but to make life easier I used a bottle of Loctite Gel for the benches to help hold the strips in place prior to drying

This is how the build is looking now with the second deck ready to be glued to the first, which I shall do tomorrow.   Really pleased

Starting the next deck buildings

Here we go now, up a level.  You saw the second deck planked and edged so now we start on the first cabin on it.  Below you can see the construction from the parts to it being fixed to the deck.

Planked and some of the internal walls painted black

Fixed to the back of the second deck

Part 100 already.  It's the front of the building

Get the wallpaper brush and paste ready

And done

So that is the first building on the second deck in place.  As the casino wall on the first deck, the wall facing is removable for viewing inside  There is a second cabin towards the front of the ship and that needs different windows.

Well I suppose they make a difference from chairs and tables, not to mention pianos, but these have to be black on the outer frame and grey on the rebate after a coat of primer.  Steady hand required.

Here are three of the outer walls of the second cabin.  These are painted white on the inside as opposed to the black on the back rooms of the first cabin.
Well that's it for today.  Another productive day and well pleased.

Thursday 25 April 2013

Sorry I have been a bit lazy with the blog.  I have been working on the ship but just haven't had much time to do the blog.  But here we are back again.

Ok here we are showing some of the finishing touches, strips finishing off round the edge of the walls
The next job was to bend a strip of wood to make the Breakwater at the bow and also fitting the knighthead, whatever that does.
Now some of the bits and bobs that are needed to make the ship look good are being made.  Here are a series of pics showing things going together

So you can see the furniture etc that went in the casino and the theatre.  The casino doors. The stage and fancy pillar work plus those funny black things at the front.

Next was to make a start on the next deck

That was planked out as you can see, then as the next pics will show, I put an edge round it, checked it for fit and started to get together the first cabin to go on this deck.

Finally while things were drying off I gave the hull and first deck a couple of coats of satin varnish and painted the underside of the second deck white.

Things are really coming together now but as we are now making a lot more delicate parts things are taking a lot longer.  Also there is a lot of painting and painting, especially miniature things, is not my forte.
The next post should show the next deck starting to take shape.

Bits and bobs

Carrying on from yesterday I had a few odd bits to fit and finish off the edging strip on the hull.

At the stern I now had to fit the paddle supports.

Those little struts holding the support up took ages to get them fitting right.
Next I put some decorative planking on the cabin walls.

They just finish the edges off and make them look a bit more tidy.
Last today I fitted the breakwater.  That was very difficult bending the wood to shape, even though I had well soaked it.

The other bit behind the breakwater is called the Knightheads apparently.  Don't ask me what they are for.
May have a day off tomorrow as I need some specific paints and stuff I haven't got so I need to travel to the model shop.

Starting to decorate

Working on the cabins mostly today, first getting the walls and bulkheads ready, fitting the windows and also adding strips to cover joins and so forth.
Once you start getting in to this sort of stuff it seems to start taking a while as the little bits of titivating and making good seem to never end

Now it's out with the wallpaper brush.  Doing this you tend to paste the wallpaper just like real life, but you have to take care as the paper does seem to grip quickly.  Also I have made the engine room walls.  They are removable the same as the front cabin wall.

Finally the bottle of cyanoacrylate arrived.  The medium is still quite thin and takes around 20 seconds to cure so things do have to be held together a while.  Of course the curing time on fingers is closer to 2 seconds.

The next step is carrying on as before, adding bits and bobs, tidying up and making things pretty.
